WORK EXPERIENCE
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What exactly is Work Experience?
Students who are working and would like to earn credits for work can sign up for Work Experience.
How many credits can I get?
Students will receive 4 credit for 100 hours of Work Experience and another 4 credits for a following 100 hours of documented Work Experience. There is an 8 credits maximum for Work Experience
What grade do I have to be in to take Work Experience?
Students can start as early as grade 10 in work experience but will receive a grade 12 credit on their transcript regardless of the grade they are in when they complete it.
How do I start?
If you already have a job you need to pick up an Introductory Letter and Training plan which you need to complete with your employer. If you don’t have a job, come and talk to your Career Coordinator to see if there are unpaid work experience placements available that interest you.
I've already worked 100 hours, can I just get the credits?
No, you must have your signed Training Plan in place BEFORE you start counting your hours.
How am I graded?
Once you have completed your hours you will be asked to complete a work experience report. In this report you will answer questions about what you learned during your employment including what skills you may be able to transfer to other careers. The Career Programs Coordinator at your school will mark this report and the grade will be recorded on your transcript for Work Experience 12A and 12B (depending on how many hours you complete)
How much work is it for my supervisor?
The time involved for the supervisor should be minimal. They will be asked to sign the Training Plan, give you access to the businesses WCB number and complete a short safety review to ensure they have covered any safety training required for the position. Once your hours are completed they will be asked to complete a short multiple choice evaluation of your performance. This evaluation does not play a role in the grade you are given for the course.
I don't need the credits, why should I do Work Experience?
a) The experience of reflecting on your employment and what you learned from it will assist you in future job or university interviews as well as helping you improve your resume for the next position you apply for.
b) The process helps you recognize your strengths and weaknesses which will help you make an informed decision when it comes to your future career goals.
c) Documenting work experience on your high school transcript shows future employers or post-secondary institutions that you have workplace skills and have earned high school credit for those skills.
